Free Kindle eBooks

So I've done my best not to make a secret of the fact that my collection of New York City stories, Through a Dusty Window: New York City Stories 1910-2001, is FREE on Amazon for Kindle through Friday. Please check it out if you haven't had a chance. I'd sure appreciate any reviews on Amazon and Goodreads. (Well, let's be honest, I might not APPRECIATE a bad review... but I still respect that readers have opinions, and writers are inviting those opinions... so please share.) The Kindle Direct Publishing promotion has been interesting. I will be honest and say that I had no idea what to expect from it, and still don't in many ways... It has absolutely resulting in my work gaining a much wider audience. In 24 hours, there were more than 1000 downloads of the book. My current sales rank on free books for kindle is #191. More impressive (to me) is that the book currently ranks #4 in Short Stories and #5 in Historical Fiction (on the free lists, mind you.) Those numbers make my work appear next to Ken Follet's Winter of the World. Not something I would have ever imagined! (Please know that I am not comparing my work or my limited success in any way to Mr. Follett's. I admire him wildly and am just thrilled to see my name in a similar context, that's all...)

I did a minimal bit of promotion ahead of the free days beginning... posting to sites that list Kindle free books in hopes of garnering some interest. And I alerted my "personal networks" - family, friends, facebook... It's been really heady seeing people's reactions. I don't tell many people in my "real" life that I'm a writer at this point. I figure that there needs to be some tangible evidence of such before I'm comfortable talking much about it. This is a first step down that path.

I'd love to hear the experiences that others have had with the Amazon KDP select promotion process. Did it result in increased sales after the fact? More reviews?
